About the Sailing School
This is the year that you, your family and friends can learn to sail!
The Whitby Yacht Club Sailing School has been teaching members of the Durham community to sail for 30 years, and every year more people discover the fun, the challenge, and the excitement of sailing! We have taught hundreds of sailors: some have gone on to complete ocean crossings, others to compete in the Olympics and international races. Many have bought their own boats, explored the Great Lakes with their families, and introduced their friends to the sport of sailing. All have learned to sail safely, and all have had fun!
Our tremendously successful adult programs are being expanded this year. Our courses are designed for people with all levels of sailing experience, from beginner to novice to experienced racer, and are taught by qualified sailing instructors on our fleet of keel boats.
The WYC Sailing School is a great way to enjoy the summer, make new friends, and discover an exciting sport. The emphasis is on safety and fun, and our students look forward to coming back year after year as they progress into our more advanced programs. We think you will too! For more information, you can explore the links above, contact us to get our printed brochures, and e-mail us with any remaining questions. We look forward to seeing you on the water!
The Whitby Yacht Club was established in 1966 by an enthused group of local sailors, and in 1975 a Junior Sailing School was created to teach members of the yacht club and the community how to sail. Now, 30 years later, the program has grown tremendously with over 250 people taking lessons each year in our fleet of 30 boats.
This year we are again offering a full selection of sailing courses for adults ranging from a 3 hour Introduction to Sailing course designed for novices to advanced Racing Clinics designed for experienced racers to improve specific skills. We also offer a CYA Gold Program for our most advanced sailors.
All our programs put an emphasis on safety and fun, and include much more than learning sailing skills: they're an outstanding way to have fun this summer, make new friends, and discover an exciting sport and lifestyle you can enjoy for a lifetime.
